Energy-Efficient Lighting Illuminates Park’s Prado
By The San Diego Union-Tribune
Feb. 7–BALBOA PARK — The “green” lights are on in Balboa Park.
Mayor Jerry Sanders and the nonprofit Friends of Balboa Park threw an electrical switch yesterday to power new energy-efficient lights along the Cabrillo Bridge.
It’s part of a push to install 3,655 light-emitting diode, or LED, bulbs along El Prado from the bridge to Bea Evenson Fountain.
The energy-saving lights replace incandescent ones and will save 141,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year and reduce the city’s power bill by more than $20,000 annually, officials estimate.
The cost of the project is $28,000. The Friends group is covering $12,000 and the state Public Utilities Commission is paying the rest.
