Christophe Basso Releases New Book: 'Switch Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs'

Posted on: Friday, 8 February 2008, 18:00 CST

Renowned in the field of power supply design, applications engineer and author Christophe Basso has released his second book: "Switch Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs." This 800-page manual can be utilized as a design companion for practicing engineers or as an in-depth tutorial introduction to power conversion design for newcomers to the field and electrical engineering students.

In this book, Basso offers a theoretical study of power conversion in both the dc-dc and ac-dc fields via a systematic equation-based approach. In this way, he bridges the gaps between academic discussions of the topic, market realities and existing approaches that are often too practical to be of use in the real world of power supply design.

Capitalizing on 15 years of power supply design experience he has accumulated working as an applications engineer at ON Semiconductor, and before that at Motorola, Basso uses case study situation to demonstrate how SPICE can assist and benefit engineers when they are designing power factor correctors, flyback converters and forward converters. For example, the book begins with small-signal analysis. Basso uses new auto-toggling average models specifically developed for this publication and outlines practical implementation with more than 10 design examples.

"Switch Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs" has been published by McGraw-Hill and is available for purchase at online book retailers such as Amazon.com or from McGraw-Hill at: http://www.mhprofessional.com/.

The author will be available to discuss the book and sign copies at the Applied Power Electronics Conference in Austin, Texas. Visit the ON Semiconductor booth (No. 210) on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at noon.

Author Bio

Christophe Basso works as an Application Manager at ON Semiconductor in the company's design center located in Toulouse, France. His field of expertise includes switch-mode power supplies in both the ac-dc and dc-dc areas. He has been at the origin of numerous pulse width modulator (PWM) controllers, among which the NCP120X series has set new standards in standby power for offline power supplies. SPICE simulations are also a strong part of his knowledge. In 2001, Basso released his first book: "Switch-Mode Power Supply SPICE Cookbook," published by McGraw-Hill. Christophe holds a BSEE from Montpellier University and a MSEE from the Institut National Polytechnique of Toulouse, France.
