GEORGE TOWN: The country’s first community airline, Firefly, will fly to more international destinations once it takes delivery of five new aircraft.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the airline would add several destinations, such as Aceh and Medan, in Indonesia, for flights out of the Penang International Airport.

He said other destinations serviced by the new ATR 72-500s aircraft would be announced later.

Chan said this at a Chinese New Year open house organised by the MCA and Gerakan at the Penang International Sports Arena yesterday.

Malaysia Airlines had recently purchased 20 of the turboprop aircraft for its subsidiary, Firefly, to facilitate the expansion plans.

The ATRs will eventually replace the two Fokker 50 aircraft which are now being operated by Firefly.
