One damaged Mediterranean cable resumes service: report

CAIRO, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) — One of the two maritime cables for international telecommunication which were cut in the Mediterranean Sea in late January has resumed service, the Egyptian news agency MENA reported on Friday.

The undersea cable that was operated by SEA-ME-WEA 4 has been fixed, Vice President of Telecom Egypt (TE) Mohamed el-Nawawi was quoted as saying.

The work to repair the other cable powered by Flag Telecom was under way, added the official of TE, a leading telecommunication company in Egypt.

After the Flag cable is reconnected, the network will operate in full capacity as of Monday, Nawawi said.

Companies running the international cables will present technical reports on the repairs and the likely causes of the disruption, said the report.

On Jan. 30, internet service in Egypt was partly disrupted due to cuts in the maritime cable for international communications in the Mediterranean.

The cable damage slowed or stopped Internet access for users across parts of Asia including India and Gulf Arab countries.
