Art Blooms at Garden

The Royal Horticultural Society has bought a new stainless steel trowel, but its gardeners at Harlow Carr in Harrogate will not be using it.

Sculptor Steve Blaylock has made the trowel 44 inches long and he has placed a butterfly with blue stained glass wings on its ash handle.

The trowel joins another of Mr Blaylock’s creations for Harlow Carr – a 10ft tall spade with an appropriately scaled-up robin perched on its handle. Mr Blaylock, 44, of Killinghall, near Harrogate, works almost exclusively in stainless steel and stained glass, producing a range of creatures from owls to horses, as well as his trademark dragonflies.
