Vodafone Boss Hints at India Expansion Plan
VODAFONE boss Arun Sarin gave his strongest hint yet that he is ready to double up the mobile giant’s bets in the booming Indian market.
Mobile phones are selling like hot chapatis on the sub-continent and Sarin believes Vodafone needs more spectrum to cope with the 1.5m new subscribers signing up every month.
His preference is to buy a larger slice of the airwaves from the government. Failing that, Sarin appears ready to take a leading role in the expected consolidation of the Indian mobile phone market.
The news will raise concerns that Vodafone will have to shell out billions more to strengthen its hand in India. The company spent over Pounds 10bn this time last year for a controlling stake in Hutchison Essar.
