Fault Hits East Coast Main Line Services
NO trains were running on the East Coast main line between York and Darlington yesterday after an overhead electric fault north of Thirsk.
The incident damaged all four overhead cables – blocking the line – shortly after 10am.
Buses were brought in to replace trains between York and Darlington.
Yesterday afternoon, Network Rail said the full extent of the damage was not yet known but was being described by engineers on site as “significant”.
Network Rail estimated that three out of the four blocked railway lines were expected to be open by 6am today with work to restore the fourth line due to completed overnight tonight.
In addition to trains between London and Edinburgh operated by National Express East Coast, the disruption also affected CrossCountry and First Transpennine Express.
Network Rail engineers from Leeds, Morpeth and Doncaster were working through the night to repair the damage.
