Warren County officials say a subsidiary of First Energy Corp. has paid about $200,000 of back property taxes for the Kinzua Reservoir — under protest.

The county and the Warren County School District say they’re still trying to collect more than $893,000 in back taxes dating to 2004 from Cleveland Electric Illuminating, the First Energy subsidiary.

The reservoir was exempt from property taxes until a state law was changed in 1999, but wasn’t placed on tax rolls until 2004. First Energy spokesman Scott Surgeoner said the company is trying to settle the dispute, but won’t give details.

The Seneca Power Station was built at the dam in 1966. It supplies electricity to parts of five states during periods of peak demand.
