DELHI Metro has become the first railway in the world to register with the United Nations (UN) clean development mechanism, which will enable it to earn carbon credits. Under the scheme, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will earn certified emission reductions (CERs) for the use of regenerative braking on its trains. DMRC can claim 400,000 CERs per year over a 10-year period, thereby generating an additional Rs 12 million ($US 305,000) per year, part of which will be invested by DMRC in projects to further reduce its carbon emissions. DMRC will sell all the CERs to Japan Carbon Finance, which funded the study into the project.

DMRC is also hoping to claim additional carbon credits based on the modal shift of commuters from car and bus transport to the metro. Copyright Simmons-Boardman Publishing Corporation Feb 2008
