Gales fell trees and strip slates from roofs

GALES reaching 60mph pounded Cleveland leaving a trail of havoc. Trees felled by the raging winds blocked roads and slates were ripped from roofs of hundreds of homes throughout the county. Lifeboats were called out at Runswick Bay and Redcar as fishing cobles struggled to get back to land while the Tees coastguard recorded gusts at force ten.

Mini-roundabouts lead to increased accidents

CUTS in the size of roundabouts doubled the number of accidents at peak traffic junctions a Cleveland County Council survey revealed. The idea of the mini-roundabouts was to increase traffic flow but motorists were often driving over the junctions without stopping, which often resulted in a collision.

Airport attracts more flights and passengers

TEESSIDE AIRPORT had broken all previous records with more people, more freight and more planes using the airport than ever before. Almost quarter of a million people had used the airport in 1977 despite an air traffic controllers dispute. This was the second consecutive year for record breaking passenger numbers.

Model world scheme comes under fire

MIDDLESBROUGH Council came under fire for a pounds 1.7m scheme to construct a massive 68-acre “model world” tourist attraction at Sandy Flatts, Acklam, with a 168-foot high replica of the Empire State building. Prospective Tory MP candidate for Middlesbrough John Jeffreys agreed with local residents who complained that the project would be a ‘white elephant’.

High Street eyesore to be cleared

STOCKTON High Street’s “resident eyesore” the rusty scaffolding at Blackett’s corner was to be cleared for a shopping development and office block. The site had been a blot on the landscape of Stockton High Street for many years and had been the subject of many complaints because of the appearance of dereliction.
