Major Players in the Gasification Markets to Explore Newest Business Relationships in Denver at Infocast's Fourth Annual Gasification 2008: The Path Forward

A major industry building event, Gasification 2008: The Path Forward -- the Business of Power and Polygen, will be held in Denver March 18 to 20, 2008.
Gasification has the potential to turn vast North American reserves of coal, oil sands, waste coal and petcoke into an array of high value products: clean power, liquid fuels, substitute natural gas (SNG), fertilizers and other chemical feedstocks. Gasification also allows for some flexibility between outputs, providing physical hedges -- the "Polygen" option -- and promises to be the most efficient long-run solution for capturing carbon while utilizing these valuable feedstocks.
However, gasification projects still face many challenges. Recently the development of many IGCC projects has slowed as a result of uncertainty regarding the pricing of carbon under future GHG regulation regimes. Moreover, gasification projects are not simple to finance, as financiers remain reluctant to assume technology risk and technology developers are reluctant to financially guarantee the performance of their equipment. Gasification developers are confronting these challenges in a variety of creative ways.
Most recently, Green Rock Energy began talks with lenders about structuring a $1 billion non-recourse project financing for a gasification project in St. James Parish, LA. Some of the potential lenders will be presenting at Infocast's Gasification 2008, as will GE Energy and Refined Energy Holdings -- companies involved with other Green Rock gasification projects.
In order for this promising industry, positioned at the intersection of power generation and petrochemical refining, to reach its full potential, all approaches need to be shared across the gasification communities. As a consequence, Infocast has designed this year's annual gasification summit to highlight the challenges and most creative responses of today's gasification industry.
