North American Airlines Suspends Between New York, Africa

Feb. 19–An airline unit of Peachtree City-based Global Aero Logistics is suspending flights between New York and two destinations in Africa, citing fuel prices.

North American Airlines flights to Lagos, Nigeria, and Accra, Ghana, end on May 20, the company said Tuesday.

The airline said it was the first airline in decades to establish scheduled service on the routes when it started flights in 2005.

Delta Air Lines later launched service to Lagos and Accra.

North American also will ax service to Georgetown, Guyana, in South America, it said Tuesday.

“We have been pleased that all of these markets have performed on a revenue basis as we anticipated,” said Rob Binns, Chief Commercial and Planning Officer for North American.

“What now makes these markets untenable is the rising cost of fuel. We have seen our jet fuel costs increase 60 percent since we entered the Africa markets in 2005.”

Passengers booked on discontinued North American flights will get a refund for the unused portion of their reservation or may opt to travel sooner, the airline said. For questions and refunds, contact North American at 1-800-359-6222.

Global Aero Logistics also includes World Airways, a charter carrier.
