Dushanbe, 26 February: Avalanches have buried two people in the east of Tajikistan. The Emergency Situations and Civil Defence Committee [ESCDC] under the government of Tajikistan told Asia-Plus today that the tragedy happened in the village of Sang-i Surkh in Nurobod District on 24 February. (This mountain village in the Rasht valley is better known as Kabudjar, where there is the danger of avalanches and landslides every year).
The melting of snowdrifts in the mountain caused a powerful avalanche, which buried two teenagers - sixteen-year-old Suhbatullo Fayzali and 13-year-old Saidjafar Fayzali. The two were brothers. Their bodies have been dug out from under the snow.
The source said the committee had provided the family of the deceased with necessary food and warm clothes from its reserves.
The committee warns the residents of the country of continuing avalanches, specifically in rural areas.
The source said 10 people had been killed by avalanches in Tajikistan since the beginning of the year.
