Vodafone Begins Trials for World Roaming Service
March 10, 2008
Vodafone’s 4G wireless technology, Long Term Evolution, may allow mobile phone users to use their handsets anywhere in the world, if its trials in Europe, US and China prove to be successful, reported the Financial Times.
Verizon Wireless and China Mobile have joined Vodafone in the trials which began in February 2008. The trials are likely to concentrate on developing chipsets that will allow handsets to work on two versions of Long Term Evolution (LTE).
Steve Pusey, chief technology officer of Vodafone, said: “LTE can enable one handset to roam the world. This is ground breaking.”
Vodafone is expecting to implement LTE after 2010 while Verizon Wireless is planning its rollout from 2010-11.
