Fraport Traffic Figures – February 2008: Dynamic Growth Despite Constraints

FRANKFURT, Germany, March 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Traffic at Frankfurt Airport continued to develop dynamically in February 2008. Due to the leap-year effect, the number of passengers rose by 8.2 percent year-on-year to 3.85 million. Even after adjusting for the additional operating day (February 29), FRA still achieved about a four percent jump in passenger traffic versus February 2007. In the first two months of the current business year, 5.8 percent more passengers used Germany’s largest air transportation hub than in the comparable period in 2007.

Airfreight activity at Frankfurt Airport experienced similarly robust development. With nearly 169,000 metric tons, FRA handled 7.2 percent more airfreight than in February 2007. Airmail rose by 2.3 percent to almost 7,300 metric tons. Aircraft movements also climbed by 2.7 percent to approximately 38,000 takeoffs and landings in February 2008. With above-average growth of 5.1 percent, accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) increased to just under 2.2 million metric tons – because of the continuously rising share of widebody aircraft at FRA. Correspondingly, the 9.1 percent surge in intercontinental traffic proved to be the driving force for FRA’s passenger sector. In particular, routes to and from Latin America were in great demand (up 20.4 percent).

The Fraport Group’s majority-owned airports (Frankfurt, Frankfurt-Hahn, Antalya, Lima, Burgas and Varna) served a total of almost 5.1 million passengers in February 2008 – 8.5 percent more than in the same month last year. Peru’s Lima Airport (LIM) registered nearly 650,000 passengers (up 20.7 percent). Fraport’s terminals at Antalya Airport (AYT) in Turkey welcomed approximately 318,000 passengers, a 6.4 percent year-on-year rise. Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN) reported a 9.7 percent drop in traffic to 237,000 passengers. With well over 15,000 passengers, Bulgaria’s Varna Airport (VAR) achieved growth of 23.3 percent; Burgas Airport (BOJ), the second Black Sea gateway, saw traffic grow by 36.9 percent to 791 passengers.

Total cargo (airfreight and airmail) throughput at Fraport’s six airports increased by 10.6 percent in February 2008 to more than 200,000 metric tons. The number of aircraft movements soared by 6.4 percent to well over 52,000 takeoffs and landings.
