MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax) – Yakutia-based diamond monopoly Alrosa (RTS: ALRS) plans to open a representation in Namibia to carry out a number of projects including power plant construction, General Director Sergei Vybornov said in Windhoek.

He discussed the power plant construction project at a meeting with Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba.

“We have already held talks with Project Constitution in St. Petersburg on construction of two power plants. That project was approved by the Namibian president. We will also prospect diamond deposits,” Vybornov said.

“We have a construction company and a hydroelectric station on the Chicapa River in Angola. We hope to be able to build such a structure and construct such a station in Namibia,” he said.

The new Namibian power plants would make it possible to avoid the electricity shortages in South Africa.

Alrosa is carrying out a number of diamond projects in Angola (Catoca and Kamachia-Kamajiku), as well as the Chicapa hydroelectric plant project.

Alrosa, in a consortium with other companies, holds the license to geological exploration for oil and gas in Angola.
