Spanish clean energy firm Iberdrola Renovables has completed the commissioning of its 223.6MW Klondike III wind farm in the US state of Oregon, which is reported to be the company's largest wind farm anywhere in the world.
With eighty 1.5MW General Electric wind turbines, fourty-four 2.3MW units made by Siemens and a single Mitsubishi 2.4MW unit, the wind farm is expected to produce enough power in a year to supply some 110,000 homes, while sparing the atmosphere of some 350,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
The commissioning of Klondike III helps strengthen Iberdrola Renovables's position in the US market, where the Spanish clean energy firm is reported to be the second-largest wind operator by installed capacity. The firm plans to focus growth efforts in the US over the next three years.
At the end of 2007, the company's wind power capacity in the US stood at 2,145MW, while new wind projects in the country reached nearly 22,000MW. In addition, it is currently building another six wind farms in the US, with a total installed capacity of 369MW.
