SSE Subsidiary Consults on Scotland-Shetland Transmission Line
Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission, a subsidiary of Scottish and Southern Energy, is consulting on its draft proposals for the possible development of a new high voltage transmission line capable of accommodating power from renewable energy developments on the Shetland Islands and to connect them to the existing mainland transmission network at Beauly, Scotland.
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said that the draft proposal comprises a number of elements, and will involve the construction of a high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter site in the Kergord Valley on Shetland and a 7km HVDC underground cable between Kergord and the shoreline at Weisdale Voe.
The proposal also calls for the construction of a 330km HVDC subsea cable circuits between Weisdale and Portgordon on the Moray coast of Scotland, a 17km HVDC underground cable between Portgordon and Blackhillock, and a HVDC converter substation site adjacent to the Blackhillock substation.
