Colliers Flock Back to Mine
SCORES of miners have contacted a Midland colliery following a recruitment drive, signalling a new wave of optimism in an industry which had been all but written off.
Bosses at Daw Mill Colliery at Arley, near Nuneaton, have been amazed at the response since they advertised for a team of 24 miners two weeks ago.
The recruitment drive follows an initiative by UK Coal to develop new reserves and work on a range of other projects at the pit.
Daw Mill is the largest of the four mines operated by UK Coal and employs 600 men. It produces up to three million tonnes of coal a year extracting materials five metres high from the rich Warwickshire Thick seam.
Bosses at the Warwickshire pit want former colliers to join the workforce to increase domestic production.
