DETROIT, March 27 /PRNewswire/ — DTE Energy’s GreenCurrents renewable energy program has received “Green-e certification” from the Center for Resource Solutions, the nation’s leading certification and verification program for renewable energy.
The Green-e program provides independent, third-party certification to ensure renewable energy meets strict environmental and consumer protection standards. DTE Energy joins a network of more than 150 certified Green-e vendors that market almost 10 million megawatt hours of renewable energy annually.
“We are extremely proud to join other renewable energy programs around the country that have received Green-e certification,” said Trevor Lauer, vice president of retail marketing for DTE Energy. “We recognize how important it is to our customers to see the program create new, Michigan-based renewable energy resources for today, and for generations to come.”
GreenCurrents was introduced last April to give DTE Energy’s Detroit Edison electric customers the option of “greening up” their power with renewable energy created from wind, biomass and other environmentally friendly sources.
“Green-e is happy to welcome DTE Energy to the Green-e Renewable Energy Certification Program,” said Andrew Nourafshan, Green-e analyst. “We’re pleased that DTE Energy’s electric customers in Southeast Michigan have easy access to certified, locally-produced renewable energy from their local utility.”
Orjiakor Isiogu, chairman of the Michigan Public Service Commission Chairman, said certification of the GreenCurrents program is good news for Michigan as the state builds on its renewable energy foundation.
“By becoming certified by the Center for Resource Solutions, this renewable energy program offers its customers assurance that the renewable energy they are purchasing meets strict standards verified by a third party,” he said. “It’s exciting to see so many DTE Energy electric customers – both residential and business – supporting renewable energy by participating in the company’s GreenCurrents program.”
Providers of Green-e certified renewable energy agree to abide by the Green-e Code of Conduct and meet strict Green-e disclosure and truth in advertising requirements. All Green-e marketers undergo an annual verification audit to document that the company purchased and/ or generated enough quantity and type of renewable energy to meet customer demand and marketing claims.
Under the GreenCurrents program, DTE Energy’s Detroit Edison electric customers can select a renewable energy option that best fits their budget. For as little as $2.50 extra a month, residential customers can purchase a block of renewable energy that’s equal to 15-20 percent of a typical home’s monthly electric usage. Customers also can choose to match 100 percent of their home’s electricity consumption with renewable resources by paying an extra $10 to $15 per month for a typical household.
Business customers can purchase 1,000 kilowatt hours of green energy for an extra $20 a month – or match all of their electricity usage with renewable energy for an additional cost of two cents per kilowatt hour.
