RWE Innogy has secured access to wind power projects with a total capacity of 200MW in Poland. The sites are located in the Masuria and Pomerania regions of the country.
Concurrently, RWE Innogy has signed a contract with a Polish project developer. The first permits are expected to be granted before the end of the year. The first wind power systems are due to come on stream in 2010.
RWE noted that, in Poland, energy utilities have to provide 10.4% of energy consumption from renewable energy sources by the year 2010. By 2020, this level is required to increase to at least 15%.
According to the Polish grid operator's calculations, 4000MW of wind power capacity will have to come on stream by 2010 in order to achieve this aim. RWE said that only 300MW of wind power capacity is connected to the grid currently.
Fritz Vahrenholt, CEO of RWE Innogy, said: "Poland has created a favorable environment for renewables. This is why we should grow our position there. We are now on a promising track with a total of 280MW of planned power plant capacity."
