GSE began in 1997 as a way for Duke employees to give back to the communities where they live and work. Originally planned as a month-long program, GSE has expanded to two months to accommodate all of the projects planned. Last year, more than 4,500 employees participated in 500 projects for a total of 15,000 hours of volunteer service to more than 370 nonprofit partners in 153 communities across the U.S.
Some of the events being planned this year include food, clothing and blood drives; hands-on educational projects and mentoring opportunities with students; various environmental, weatherization and home repair projects and clean-up initiatives along trails, parks, creeks, beaches and highways, to name a few.
"Volunteerism is not mandatory at Duke Energy," CEO Jim Rogers said. "It's tradition.
"Our employees spend countless hours throughout the year giving back to their communities. GSE simply provides a rallying point for everyone to begin planning projects and rounding up teammates."
Duke Energy maintains an electronic "community page" on its employee web site where employees can lead projects or sign up to volunteer. The company also supports these volunteer efforts by offering employee grants that can provide supplies and equipment for qualifying projects.
