LAS VEGAS, April 1, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CTIA Wireless -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has extended its strategic relationship with Genband, a market-leading developer of next-generation media gateways and applications solutions, by adding Genband's new G9 Converged Media Gateway to Alcatel-Lucent carrier-grade Mobile Next Generation Network (NGN) solution.
In Alcatel-Lucent's standards-compliant (3GPP Release 4 and Release 5) Mobile NGN solution, the media gateway provides a migration path from stand- alone mobile switching centers to centralized mobile call servers with distributed media gateways, and to (Release 5) IP Multimedia Subsystem- compatible networks.
"Genband has been a trusted partner, providing the key high-performance gateway component in our Mobile NGN solution for several years," said Dave Geary, president of Alcatel-Lucent's Multicore activities. "The success of our relationship makes Genband's newest media gateway an ideal addition to our NGN portfolio as we help operators efficiently migrate to next-generation wireless broadband technology."
Alcatel-Lucent and Genband's relationship produced the first commercial deployment of Genband's media gateway in early 2004 and currently, more than 20 million Genband media gateway ports are deployed as part of Alcatel- Lucent's market-leading Mobile NGN solution within many top mobile service providers' networks worldwide.
"After years of working together to serve mobile customers around the globe, we are pleased to expand this relationship with Alcatel-Lucent," said Charles Vogt, President and CEO of Genband. "The best-of-breed G9 media gateway enables Alcatel-Lucent to provide low-cost distributed networks for mobile operators and facilitate exciting enhancements like Fixed Mobile Convergence to help operators improve customer loyalty and provide superior call quality."
Genband's high-density G9 platform is the latest generation of carrier class media gateways with field-hardened software, advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology, and a host of integrated, mobile-specific features like Transcoder Free Operation (TrFO), which improves voice quality and reduces network costs, Voice Quality Enhancement Features, and an integrated Signaling Gateway.
Visitors to the CTIA Exhibition (April 1-3) will see the gateway displayed in Alcatel-Lucent's booth 2613 and Genband's booth 6365.
