Alcatel-Lucent Upgrades Long-Haul Microwave App

Posted on: Friday, 4 April 2008, 06:00 CDT

France based Alcatel-Lucent has enhanced its long-haul microwave application to support migration from time division multiplexing (TDM) to Ethernet transport over wireless transport networks.

Alcatel-Lucent said MDR 8000 Release 2 is built on its digital microwave radio technology. It said it provides backhauling capabilities for mobile and WiMax applications, and also meets network requirements for mobile backhaul and long-haul trunking of different segments, including homeland security, defense, energy infrastructure, and transportation.

Features include dual Gigabit Ethernet ports and 32 DS1 circuit interfaces that allow operators to reallocate capacity in-service with no disruption as the transport rate for IP services grows. It operates in the frequency range of 2GHz to 11GHz, covering all microwave bands per FCC Part 101, Industry Canada, and NTIA.

It also operates in unlicensed bands at 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz, and also in market-specific bands such as 1900MHz for personal communications service, 1700MHz for US Federal Government, and 2.3GHz for wireless communications service (WCS).

Philippe Dumont, vice-president of wireless transmission activities at Alcatel-Lucent, said: "The latest release of the MDR 8000, which has been proven successful, further confirms our focus on advancing our product portfolio to meet operators' increasing capacity and flexibility needs driven by IP-based service adoption."
