United Airlines Cancels 38 Flights to Complete Overdue Safety Tests

Posted on: Friday, 4 April 2008, 09:00 CDT

United Airlines passengers had to face flight cancellations and last minute delays on April 2, 2008 as the airline grounded 52 Boeing 777s to conduct overdue fire-suppression tests on the planes, reported MarketWatch.

The airline is reported to have said that the inspections had caused 38 flights to be cancelled, which included 20 international flights. It is claimed that the decision to pull the planes from service represents a string of maintenance rechecks by carriers that have had airlines such as American and Delta grounding their planes.

According to Megan McCarthy, the spokesperson for United, the airline had voluntarily disclosed the information to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) after it found that a test of one of the fire-suppression systems' five bottles that hold a flame retardant had not been performed as per schedule.

The FAA reportedly discovered fuselage cracks in four Southwest Airlines aircraft in March, following which the organization has been auditing and inspecting airline maintenance records. It will soon reveal its findings on safety checks, the FAA said. It reportedly stated that, despite the number of groundings, US carriers have had very high compliance rates.

The airline has restored to service 22 of the 52 Boeing 777s that were grounded, and has decided to give fee waivers to passengers who had to change flights due to the cancellations.
