Posted on: Thursday, 10 April 2008, 15:00 CDT

CHICAGO, April 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nancy Montanez Johner, Under Secretary for Food Nutrition and Consumer Services, Mark Keenum, Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agriculture Services, and Bruce Knight, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs are the recipients of the 2008 Distinguished Public Service award from America's Second Harvest -- The Nation's Food Bank Network.

The 2008 Distinguished Public Service award goes to Knight, Keenum and Johner for their exceptional innovation and support demonstrated through the Stocks for Food barter program. The program will provide food to emergency feeding organizations valued at nearly $90 million at a time when food banks are facing record low levels of inventory.

"America's Second Harvest is deeply grateful to these three public servants for their vision, creativity and an unwavering commitment to ending hunger in America," said Vicki Escarra, president and chief executive officer for America's Second Harvest. "Our food banks across the nation are struggling to meet the needs of hungry Americans, and the barter program will bring much needed, temporary relief to our network."

USDA has long supported hungry Americans and food banks through federal nutrition programs. The Stocks for Food Program, the first of its kind, was introduced in July 2007 and authorizes funds of uncommitted commodity inventories in exchange for finished food product that can be donated to feed the hungry, otherwise known as a barter program. More than $70 million of this food will move through the America's Second Harvest network of member food banks.

America's Second Harvest -- The Nation's Food Bank Network is the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. Through its network of more than 200 member food banks, America's Second Harvest annually provides assistance to more than 25 million people in need, including more than 9 million children and nearly 3 million seniors in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Each year, America's Second Harvest secures and distributes more than 2 billion pounds of food and grocery products to support feeding programs at approximately 50,000 local charitable agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after-school programs, and Kids Cafes.
