North Carolina Survey to Show Public Wants Alternatives to Proposed Duke Energy Cliffside Coal-Fired Power Plant Project

Posted on: Monday, 21 April 2008, 15:00 CDT

A new scientific public opinion survey of 600 North Carolina residents to be released at 11:00 a.m. EDT on April 22, 2008 will show little public support for moving ahead with Duke Energy's proposed Cliffside coal-fired power plant.

The survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) for the nonprofit and nonpartisan Civil Society Institute think tank will show strong support in North Carolina for clean energy power (including wind and solar) and a stepped-up emphasis on energy efficiency and conservation before any new coal-fired power plant is built. The survey also will show what percentage of North Carolina residents would be more likely to support a political candidate who opposes Duke Energy's proposed Cliffside plant.

News event speakers will be:

* June Blotnick, executive director, Carolinas Clean Air Coalition in Charlotte, N.C.;

* Alice Loyd, executive director, North Carolina Interfaith Power and Light in Raleigh, N.C.;

* Jim Warren, executive director, NC WARN (Waste Awareness and Response Network) in Durham, N.C.;

* Civil Society Institute Senior Fellow Gail Pressberg; and

* Opinion Research Corporation Senior Researcher Graham Hueber.
