India Expects Record Food Grain Output

India, facing its highest inflation rate in three years, got good news Wednesday when the government announced record food grain estimates.
Agriculture Secretary P.K. Mishra told reporters output for the 2007-08 crop year in the country, the world's second-largest producer of wheat, was estimated at a record 227.32 million tons, up 10 million tons from the previous year, the Press Trust of India reported. The total includes a record 76.78 million tons of wheat.
The higher production was credited to even rainfall distribution and favorable temperature during the latest growing season.
The coalition government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, which will face elections next year, has been concerned about the current inflationary trend.
The new numbers were expected to have a sobering effect on food grain prices and help ease import needs.
The 76.78 million tons of wheat beat the previous record of 76.36 million tons in 1999-2000. Output last year was 75.81 million tons.
Record crops also were seen for rice, corn, soybean and cotton, Mishra said. Rice output totaled 95.68 million tons, up 2 million tons from last year.
