Air Canada to charge fees for extra bags onboard

OTTAWA, April 25 (Xinhua) — Air Canada will soon begin to charge 25 Canadian dollars (25 U.S. dollars) for a second suitcase a traveler brings onboard, the company announced Friday.

The Montreal-based airline said passengers bringing two bags on flights within Canada and to the United States with Tango and Tango Plus will be charged 25 Canadian dollars (25 U.S. dollars) on flights after July 15, 2008.

“This policy change is part of the on-going review of our activities that allow us to keep pace with current industry standards and economic realities, while remaining competitive with our main North American competitors,” said Duncan Dee, executive vice-president, in a release.

Travelers purchasing the airline’s latitude and executive class tickets will not be affected by the new policy.

Some airlines in the United States have taken similar steps earlier. In February, United Airlines said it would begin charging travelers 25 U.S. dollars for checking a second bag.

Air Canada is Canada’s largest airline and flag carrier and the world’s 11th largest passenger airline by fleet size.
