Shell Intends to Pull Out of London Array Wind Power Project
Shell has said that it wants to pull out from the London Array wind power project while increasing investment in onshore wind farms in the US.
Once completed, the London Array was to be a big offshore wind farm, with 341 turbines in the Thames Estuary capable of generating 1,000MW of power. Shell had an equal share in the project with E.ON and Dong Energy.
The BBC maintained that Shell’s decision has been widely criticized by environmental groups.
Nick Rau, energy campaigner of Friends of the Earth, an environmental group, said: “(Shell) should be investing its profits in renewable energy projects, not focusing its efforts on making money from sucking fossil fuels out of the ground and contributing to climate change.”
The Financial Times quoted Paul Golby, chief executive of E.ON, as saying: “We’re very disappointed by Shell’s decision but will continue to work with them as we look to find a way forward, but I believe that, at the very least, some delay to the project is now inevitable.”
