Residential Construction Workers Join Forces and Protest for Safe Jobs and Fair Working Conditions at BMHC Select Build

Posted on: Monday, 5 May 2008, 15:00 CDT

Residential construction workers, who say they have been silenced and taken advantage of, will join together in solidarity with LIUNA representatives to demand safe jobs and fair working conditions at BMHC Select Build. In addition to outside protests, BMHC Select Build workers will tell their stories and express their grievances to the company's Build Board of Directors during the annual shareholder meeting.

According to workers, many at BMHC Select Build are subject to unfair layoffs, pay cuts and working hours. Even more deplorable, workers argue, is BMHC Select Build's negligent record of failing to prevent and respond to worker injuries resulting from an unsafe work environment.

As judged by recent proxy filings, BMHC Select Build, like many companies in the housing industry, is experiencing economic hardship during the housing and mortgage crisis. No one understands the impact of the current crisis more than the working men and women of the construction industry who, according to the U.S. Labor Department, have seen 359,000 construction jobs lost since the start of 2007. However, workers believe that economic hardship is never an excuse to justify the kind of unsafe and unfair working conditions that Select BMHC Build maintains. OSHA statistics reveal the impact of unsafe working conditions is often hardest on Hispanic workers.

Similar protests will take place on Tuesday, May 6th at BMHC Select Build locations in Rancho Cucamonga, California and Las Vegas, Nevada.

The half-million members of LIUNA -- the Laborers' International Union of North America -- are on the forefront of the construction industry, a powerhouse of 10 million workers who build America.
