May 11--APPLE VALLEY -- When Larry Jones called Verizon to upgrade to a fiber-optic line almost two years ago, he never thought he'd be fighting with the communications company and its subcontractor over missing tools.
"Apparently (Verizon) subcontracted out to one company who then subcontracted out to another company to get the job done," said Jones, who had a Lincoln welder and an angle g r i n d e r a l -- l e g e d ly s t o -- len from his g ara g e that totaled about $1,100.
W h e n h e contacted Verizon about the alleged theft, after reporting it to the police, a representative from the company, Jaime Velazquez, tried to help Jones.
But eventually, Velazquez's superiors told Jones he would have to take it up with the original subcontractor, Haltec Inc., in small claims court, Jones said.
"And that's where we've been for nearly two years, since October 2006," said the Apple Valley resident. "I had already written this off."
Then Jones heard about local consumer advocate Michael "Bogey" Boguslawski.
"Really, what Verizon should have done was paid for Mr. Jones' tools and then they could take it up with the subcontractors," Boguslawski said.
After a few weeks of negotiations with Haltec representatives, the company agreed to send Jones a check for $1,129.22.
"Bogey even called Jaime, and Jaime went down to the company and brought the check back to me," Jones said. "I'm really happy with what Bogey and Jaime did. If it wasn't for Bogey, none of this would have happened. When he gets a hold of somebody, there's no getting away from him."
To get in contact with Bogey, send a letter with as much documentation as possible and contact information to P.O. Box 1389, Victorville, CA 92393 or fax it to 241-1860.
Due to the high volume of letters, people are asked to be patient.
