Williams Cos. Inc. plans to extend another pipeline into New York City with a proposed 250-mile expansion of its Transco system.
The Tulsa-based consolidated natural gas company is holding an open season to obtain commitments for the expansion that would provide a conduit for natural gas from the Rockies and Appalachia to markets on the East Coast.
The proposed pipeline extension would also provide an outlet for gas from the Marcellus shale, an emerging natural gas play in the Appalachia region.
The expansion combines a pair of projects announced late last year. The proposed Rockies Connector Pipeline and Transco's Northeast Connector Project would be merged into the Northeast Supply Project, Williams said.
Phil Wright, president of Williams' natural gas pipeline business, said the market response during those open seasons was positive.
"As a result of discussion with potential shippers, we are now pursuing these projects jointly as a single, Transco-owned and operated project, providing a continuous path for growing domestic supply sources to serve demand on the East Coast," he said in a prepared statement.
Firm transportation could begin as soon as November 2011, Williams said.
The proposed expansion, which is subject to federal approval, would connect to the Rockies Express Pipeline near Clarington, Ohio, to Transco's mainline in southeastern Pennsylvania, Williams said. The expansion would also include a new lateral connecting the Transco pipeline in northern New Jersey to lower Manhattan, N.Y.
