Excerpt from report in English by Vietnamese radio text website on 13 May

Deputies of the National Assembly discussed the draft law on atomic energy in Hanoi on 13 May, focusing on the application of atomic energy to develop nuclear power in Vietnam.

Most deputies highly valued the formulation of the draft law in the context of Vietnam's national industrialisation and modernization process. They said that atomic energy has been applied to many different areas and can be used to generate a large source of power, regardless of the country's natural conditions.

However, they laid a strong emphasis on the safety of nuclear power plants if they are to be built in Vietnam in the future.

Deputy Trinh Thi Gioi from the north-central province of Thanh Hoa pointed out the fact that building a nuclear power plant is a sensitive issue and local people are worried about any possible incidents in the area where the plant is located. She proposed that the government have special policies to support the people living in the area.

Deputy Dinh Xuan Thao from the southern province of Kien Giang agreed with other deputies that it is necessary to develop nuclear power in Vietnam to cope with chronic power shortages. He said even though nuclear power has a high level of safety, it could cause far- reaching consequences if an incident happens. He asked policymakers to work towards ensuring the safety of humans and the environment.

Other deputies asked for specific mechanisms for storing, transporting and conserving unused radioactive materials from the plant to the national stores. [passage omitted]
