Business Roundtable Statement on Senate Energy Legislation

Business Roundtable today made the following statement regarding Senate Energy Legislation:
"Today, the Senate will once again consider legislation aimed at solving the growing energy crisis in the United States. While it may be politically expedient to pick winners and losers, Business Roundtable believes it is time to put partisan posturing aside and solve the nation's energy challenges for all Americans.
"While the energy legislation enacted into law late last year contained many positive provisions, it failed to improve exploration of and access to domestic oil and gas reserves, promote greater use of coal-based fuels and feed stocks to produce petroleum and natural gas, and encourage greater progress on efficiency. These outstanding issues should now receive Congress' full attention.
"Almost a year ago, Business Roundtable leveraged the considerable experience of our 160 member CEOs to highlight four critical policy areas to move the country forward: increasing conservation and energy efficiency, expanding access to domestic energy sources, diversifying our energy supply and investing in new technology. Legislation that fails to tackle these four tenets will at best be seen as business as usual in Washington," said John J. Castellani, president of Business Roundtable.
Business Roundtable (www.businessroundtable.org) is an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. companies with $4.5 trillion in annual revenues and nearly 10 million employees. Member companies comprise nearly a third of the total value of the U.S. stock markets and represent over 40 percent of all corporate income taxes paid to the federal government. Collectively, they returned $114 billion in dividends to shareholders and the economy in 2006.
