New York (VNA) -Vietnam has condemned the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) recent rebel attacks in Omdurman for aggravating the already volatile situation and threatening the peace process in Darfur and Sudan .

Vietnamese representative to the UN Security Council Nguyen Thanh Ha presented the national viewpoint on the situation in Darfur at the council's meeting in New York on May 14.

The Vietnamese official expressed concern about deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Darfur, noting the violence and banditry which has adversely affected the delivery of much needed aid to civilians.

As a solution to the situation, Ha reaffirmed the country's strong support for the prompt and full deployment of the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in accordance with the UN Security Council's Resolution 1769.

While highlighting initial progress in the deployment of UNAMID, Ha called on the international community to make further contributions to help UNAMID improve capabilities in the region, especially in terms of transportation.

The Vietnamese official expressed support for the Secretary General's plan to appoint a Joint Chief Mediator for the situation, while calling on all parties, including rebel groups, to demonstrate political will and commitment to peace.

She also raised concern about escalating tension in the relations between Sudan and its neighbour Chad , calling the two countries to strictly adhere to the Dakar Agreement to ease tension in Darfur and the sub-region.
