Vietnam sentences three people for terrorist activity
HANOI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- A Vietnamese court has handed down jail sentences of five-nine months to three members of an overseas organization called Viet Tan (Vietnam Reform Party) on charges of terrorism, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Wednesday.
The People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday gave Vietnamese American Nguyen Quoc Quan, 55, a sentence of six months; Nguyen Hai, 57, Vietnamese man residing in Thailand, nine months; and Nguyen The Vu, 31, from the city, five months and 26 days. Quan will be expelled from Vietnam after Quan's jail term is completed.
According to the court's verdict, Quan and other members of Viet Tan, launched a campaign called Crossing the River last August, aiming to build a terrorism network in Vietnam and distribute leaflets to instigate violent disturbance and anti- government action, threatening the country's security.
Quan, arriving in Vietnam last November, linked up with other members of the organization, including Hai, Vu, French national Nguyen Thi Thanh Van and Truong Leon, an American man of Vietnamese origin, to distribute anti-state leaflets. They were arrested in Ho Chi Minh City last November while preparing to distribute 6,750 leaflets. Van and Leon were expelled from Vietnam last December.
