Vietnamese public security official prosecuted for abusing power
HANOI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- A Vietnamese public security official, who was in charge of directing investigation of a gambling and bribery scandal that prompted the resignation of a transportation minister, has been prosecuted for abusing power while conducting duties.
Local investigation agency on Tuesday prosecuted former vice head of the Investigation Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security Pham Xuan Quac, 62, for the charge, local newspaper Youth reported Wednesday.
The agency said Quac provided some false information about the case of Bui Tien Dung, former general director of the Project Management Unit No. 18 under the Vietnamese Transport Ministry, who gambled hundreds of thousands of U.S dollars on soccer matches and gave bribes.
On Monday, Vietnamese police arrested two local journalists and prosecuted another public security official for reporting false information on the case which was detected in late 2005, and led to the resignation of former Transport Minister Dao Dinh Binh.
Dung was handed down jail term of 13 years for the charge of gambling and giving bribes, He, detained in January 2006 for making bets on international soccer matches, spent 759,800 U.S. dollars on gambling, and 39,000 dollars and 550 million Vietnamese dong (roughly 34,400 dollars) on trying to bribe some influential figures, so that they would campaign for slighter charges against him.
