Dutch scientists say they’ve achieved a new efficiency record for solar cells by the use of an ultra-thin aluminum oxide layer at the front of each cell.

The Eindhoven University of Technology researchers — Bram Hoex, Professor Richard van de Sanden and Associate Professor Erwin Kessels — said the 1 percent improvement might appear modest, but it can enable solar cell manufacturers to greatly increase the performance of their products, thereby reducing the cost of solar energy.

Hoex earned his Ph.D. last week with the research project.
