Dealers Want Malaysia Government Not to Approve New Petrol Stations

Posted on: Friday, 16 May 2008, 09:00 CDT

In an attempt to reduce fuel subsidy and check profiteering, the Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia has suggested that the government should stop further approvals to oil companies for setting up new petrol stations in the country, reported The Business Times Online.

The association believes that opening of too many petrol stations is likely to result in the government increasing fuel subsidy. The Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) also wants the government to discourage oil companies from offering incentives to consumers, encouraging them to buy more fuel.

The website has quoted the association as saying: "Now oil companies are giving all sort of incentives to the consumers to encourage them to buy more fuel. This encourages wastages and unimportant fuel purchases. The end effect is the oil companies' fuel sales volume goes up and the government pays higher fuel subsidy."
