Airlines Undercharged at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport

State officials say airlines at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport were undercharged $57 million for rents and fees over the past four years. But the Maryland Aviation Administration says it plans to recover less than half that amount, about $25 million, from airlines over the next five years. One major reason for the shortfall is that BWI officials overstated the square footage of the terminal built for Southwest Airlines, the airport’s dominant carrier, and therefore charged less rent per square foot. Southwest spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said the company will pay $12.2 million in exchange for reduced rents and landing fees.
