Pennsylvania PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Customs agents seized more than two dozen potentially harmful giant beetles - some the size of a child's hand - from an overseas package after postal workers heard the insects making scratching noises.
The large bugs arrived last week from Taiwan at a postal facility in Mohnton, about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia, in a box whose contents were labeled as toys, gifts and jellies, officials said Wednesday. An investigation is under way.
LEBANON (AP) - A former police officer and part-time clown is facing 12 to 35 years in prison in the attempted rape of a Lebanon County teenager.
Michael Fernsler, 35, of Annville, will serve that sentence after a 26- to 52-year term for molesting two 4-year-old girls in Swatara Township, in Dauphin County, in 2006. Lebanon County President Judge Robert Eby likens what he heard Wednesday to the stuff we have seen in horror movies.
HARRISBURG (AP) - Four vacancies on Pennsylvania's appellate courts, including one on the state Supreme Court, will remain unfilled for now, stuck in a partisan dispute.
The Senate's majority Republicans on Wednesday defied Gov. Ed Rendell and the Supreme Court's chief justice, Ronald D. Castille, and rejected four men nominated by Rendell to temporarily fill the openings.
HARRISBURG (AP) - A bill that represents the first major rewrite of Pennsylvania's 1961 mine safety law was passed by the House 182- 13.
The measure returns to the Senate with changes championed by the mine workers union, but opposed by mining companies. The House version would set new requirements for mine-safety checks before shifts begin, new certification standards for mine foremen, examiners and electricians and more.
