May 17--The project will include installation of a selective catalytic reduction system to remove more than 90 percent of the plant's annual nitrogen oxide emissions. The reductions will total more than 3,700 tons per year.
Separately, the unit of Al liant Energy has filed plans with state regulators for the installation of a baghouse filtering system to capture more than 90 percent of the plant's mercury emissions.
The projects will require a peak work force of 100 people and will be completed by late 2009.
"The investments in the Lansing Generating station will create economic development opportunities while mitigating the facility's impact on our environment," Interstate Power & Light President Tom Aller said in prepared remarks.
The 317-megawatt coal-fired plant originally consisted of four generating units. The selective catalytic reduction system will be installed on Unit 4, a 270-megawatt unit installed in 1977.
IP&L spokesman Ryan Stensland said the company 's long-term plans include the installation of dry scrubbers to reduce its sulfur dioxide emissions by 2016.
The project will be constructed by Cincinnati-based Enerfab.
Babcock Power Environ mental of Danvers, Mass., will engineer and procure the selective catalytic reduction system.
About 35 community leaders from Allamakee County attended Friday's groundbreaking ceremonies for the project.
