FERC to Study Md. Complaint
Federal energy regulators want to further study allegations by Maryland officials that wholesale power markets in the mid-Atlantic aren’t competitive. The Maryland Public Service Commission filed a 225-page complaint in January, asking regulators to change rules that exempt certain power plants from limits on what they can ask for the electricity they generate, and calling for $87.5 million in refunds. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said Thursday it agreed that the exemptions “have become unjust and unreasonable.” While rejecting the request for retroactive relief, FERC set for hearing the question of whether the market is adequately screened for companies that may have market power.
