KaZaK Composites Presents Paper on Low-Cost Wings Suitable for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)

KaZaK Composites, Inc., a premier provider of high value-added composite engineering and design, today announced that they have developed and manufactured several new carbon epoxy wings for use on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). These new wings can reduce costs for the Navy and the Air Force as they are defining new missions for air-deployable disposable UAVs. KaZaK has used the pultrusion process to manufacture these wings, reducing costs.
"In the past, handmade wings were often the first choice for UAVs", says John Schickling, EVP, COO/CFO of KaZaK Composites. "Unfortunately, some of the newer platforms being developed for UAVs cannot be burdened with the higher cost of handmade wings if the unit is deemed expendable. KaZaK has designed a wing that is both cost efficient and suitable for use on UAVs."
Pultrusion is an automated manufacturing technology for advanced composite structures and it is the only method currently capable of producing composite parts on a continual basis and of unlimited length. "Here at KaZaK we designed a carbon epoxy wing that had a high fiber volume and therefore excellent strength-to-weight ratios, which allows for significant weight savings over aluminum wings of the same strength," says Jerry Fanucci, president of KaZaK Composites. "Additionally, we are able to manufacture the wings through the pultrusion process, which is a very low-cost process. Pultrusion is a fully automated process and therefore has virtually no labor costs associated with it."
The combination of a low-cost pultrusion process coupled with inexpensive materials that produce a product capable of being included in new missions designed for UAVs has enabled KaZaK to present a product to the Navy and Air Force that is both economical and efficient.
