Corruption Plagues Algeria Amid Gas Profit

Posted on: Wednesday, 21 May 2008, 09:01 CDT

Corruption involving municipal services indicates Algeria is rife with corruption as the country boasts record gas profits, a report Wednesday says.

The Algerian Counter Corruption Association conducted a fraud investigation into 30 people involved in the building of the headquarters of the Algerian Water Ministry and dam projects across the country, Med Basin Newsline said.

The report said 10 percent of municipal projects are linked to fraudulent deals and warned that corruption is now a normal daily behavior in public with no response from public authorities.

The revelations came as the state-owned energy company Sonartrach predicted $81 billion in natural gas sales for 2008.
