US Department of Veterans Affairs Selects Verizon to Provide Security Services

Posted on: Thursday, 22 May 2008, 15:00 CDT

Verizon Business has signed a $6.1 million contract with US Department of Veterans Affairs to cover credentials, identity management for up to half a million government employees and contractors.

The contract has initial term of one-year and two optional extensions. The new identity credentialing service is designed to address new federal guidelines to enhance security and reduce identity fraud.

The directive's guidelines require that identification issued to gain access to facilities and IT systems be based on sound criteria for verifying an individual employee's identity; is resistant to identity fraud, tampering, counterfeiting and exploitation by terrorists; can be authenticated electronically; and is issued only by providers whose reliability has been established through an official accreditation process.

According to Verizon Business, it will host and manage the Veterans Affairs credential solutions in a secure Verizon Business data center that is supported 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with critical services backed up by redundant systems.

Kerry Bailey, vice president of Verizon Business Security Solutions, said: "With more than 15 years of experience assessing risk and designing and implementing global security solutions, Verizon Business is one of the few providers that offer both the security and government expertise to deliver a full credentialing service."
