Two Security Projects Planned for Airports
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Thursday approved additional security barriers for terminals at Newark Liberty and La Guardia airports.
The $28 million project will put more of the vertical cylindrical barriers in front of Newark’s Terminal B and La Guardia’s Central Terminal.
The first phase of the project was approved last year, not long after two men crashed a flaming Jeep loaded with gas canisters into security barriers at an airport in Scotland.
The Port Authority also announced Thursday a $400 million federal grant for in-line baggage screening improvements at New York metropolitan airports.
The grant will enable baggage conveyor-belt systems to check for explosives so passengers won’t have to carry luggage from check-in counters to screening locations.
