Signet Solar Fabricates Large Thin Film Silicon PV Module

Posted on: Monday, 26 May 2008, 06:00 CDT

Thin firm photovoltaic module manufacturer Signet Solar has fabricated the industry's first ever Gen-8.5, 5.7 square meter silicon thin film solar PV module at its new factory near Dresden, Germany, in 10 months from the start of the facility's construction.

After finishing construction of the 200,000sqft production facility in seven months, Signet Solar completed the installation of equipment and started initial fabrication in less than three months.

Signet Solar's technology reportedly lowers the cost of photovoltaic (PV) modules by combining proven silicon thin film technology, with very large area manufacturing and an industry standard equipment set.

The initial modules from the fully automated module manufacturing line reportedly met the specification of the product and were confirmed by independent testing by the Fraunhofer Institute. Signet will start prototype production in early June 2008.

Commercial production is expected to start in the third quarter of 2008 and capacity expansion to over 100MW is planned at the same site by 2009. Signet has existing customer commitments of over $400 million.
