Vietnam imports more fertilizer in first 5 months
HANOI, May 29 (Xinhua) — Vietnam is set to import nearly 2.1 million tons of fertilizers worth 921 million U.S. dollars in the first five months of this year, posting respective year-on-year rises of 39.4 percent and 164.3 percent.
Vietnam spent 197 million dollars importing 516,000 tons of urea in the five-month period, up 97.2 percent and 184.3 percent, respectively, according to the General Statistics Office on Thursday.
In 2008, Vietnam’s demand for urea is estimated at nearly two million tons, but urea producers in the country can produce 880, 000- 900,000 tons of the fertilizer.
Vietnam imported nearly 3.8 million tons of fertilizers, totaling 996 million U.S. dollars, mainly from China, Indonesia, Russia, the Middle East, Japan and Canada, in 2007, up 21.6 percent and 44. 9 percent, respectively, against 2006, said the statistics office.
